Date Wednesday, 9 September 2015 5:42 PM

Celebrate the completion of your new home with a housewarming party.

Once you've received the keys to your new home and moved in the furniture, there's only one thing left to do: throw a housewarming party! After months of watching your home design take form, you'll naturally want to celebrate its completion.

While you're busy writing the party invitations, check out these eight tips to turn your housewarming party into an unforgettable night:

1. Good housewarming parties come to those who wait

We know you're excited and can't wait to show off your new home to your friends and family, but resist the urge to throw a party the day you move in. Instead, take some time to unpack, put your things away and get your house looking presentable.

2. Decide if you want a themed party

Throwing a themed party can make your evening more memorable, give all your guests something to talk about and provide some great photo opportunities.

3. Serve nibbles, not dinner

Keep things simple by starting the party after dinner around 8 or 9 p.m. and serve up snacks instead of a full sit-down dinner. Cheese platters, cold cuts and an assortment of dips are easy to prepare and will look great against the backdrop of your new kitchen or living room.

4. Stock the bar

A week or two before the party, start stocking up the fridge and cupboards with all the non-perishables you'll need for the party, including soft drinks, juices and a few bottles of wine. To help cut costs, encourage your guests bring their own tipple of choice.

5. Invite the neighbours

Australians have a reputation for being a friendly bunch, but somehow this doesn't extend to our neighbours. According to a study from DJS Research, only 50 per cent of people would recognise their neighbours on the street.

If you haven't yet met yours, a housewarming party is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted. Slip an invitation into their letterbox and get to know those in your local community a little better.

6. Flower power

Some well-chosen decorations can give your party a festive air. Stay away from kitsch banners and plastic ornaments and opt instead for some fresh colourful flowers that complement the palette of your home.

7. Make it a night under the stars

Make use of your home's indoor-outdoor flow by holding the party outside. Not only will this provide you with more space, it'll also help you keep your floors in good condition.

8. Unleash your inner tour guide

Most of your guests are here to see your new home, so be a good host and give them the grand tour!
