Ready to start planning the house of your dreams? We have a few tips to help get you there.
Check it twice
The first thing to do is make a list of your needs and wants. Three bedrooms might be non-negotiable, four a luxury; you need two bathrooms but could live without an outdoor kitchen. Next, put together a detailed budget to determine what extras you can afford. Don’t allocate your entire budget from the outset – you’ll need a buffer in case things don’t go to plan. Work through your list of wants and see what is within your budget and what isn’t.
Even if you have an idea of what you want your home to look like, spend some time researching the styles, materials and finishes you like. Look through home magazines and design blogs for examples that catch your eye, and keep a scrapbook or Pinterest board you can show your builder or decorator along the way.
It’s easy to get swept up in the latest trends and design fads, but try to pick one aesthetic and stick with it throughout the home: it may be earthy browns and neutrals, a crisp beachside palette of blues and whites, or a slightly industrial look. Whatever you choose, an overall theme will help connect each room and give your home consistency and balance.
Ask the professionals
Enlist the services of an architect or professional design consultant during the planning stages, to ensure your home flows well before the build starts. You’ll need a fully qualified and reputable builder and all the relevant tradespeople – ask friends and family for recommendations and always get at least three quotes. And for the final touches, when it comes to fittings and furnishings don’t be afraid to ask for help – an interior designer will help you put together the interior you’ve always dreamed of.
