Build your home with plenty of storage space

Storage is one of the most overlooked elements of home design. Sleek, contemporary display homes are great for inspiration, but it's easy to forget no one actually lives in these pristine properties – or tries to keep them tidy with a young family underfoot. And trust us, nothing takes the shine off a new home quite like piles of clutter on the floor.

So when you're choosing a floorplan and design for your family, it's important to consider where you're going to put all your stuff. As builders, we know it's much easier to accommodate your storage requirements from the start, rather than trying to add more shelves or cupboards down the track.

Kids' bedrooms are obvious places to start. Along with the standard built in robe, consider extra shelving to store toys and books. This can be hidden or used as a display to add colour and personality to the room.

In the parents' zone, make sure you choose a spacious ensuite design with plenty of vanity and storage space. An ensuite should provide you with a brief sanctuary from high-energy family life – but if your vanity is covered in makeup, hairbrushes and shaving products you might not feel all that relaxed.

If you have an open-plan living area, consider adding a study nook where kids can do homework and assignments. This will keep their laptops and textbooks off the breakfast bar, and means you can keep an eye on their screens as they work. A well-designed study nook doesn't need to take up too much space – a small built-in desk with simple shelving will do the trick.

Finally, if you have a growing family consider adding an activity room to your home design. This gives kids a special room to store their toys, games, sports equipment and art supplies in, while keeping your entertaining spaces free from clutter.
