The heart of your home: Kitchen design tips

A well-designed kitchen is the centre of family life.

As any family knows, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the home. A well-designed kitchen is at the heart of family life: it's the place where we cook and entertain, share meals and stories, and unwind after a long day. As a result, it's important to ensure your kitchen design strikes the right balance between functionality and aesthetic.

To achieve this, you should always start designing a kitchen with practicality in mind. Here are a few tips to ensure your kitchen not only looks great, but is a pleasure to cook in as well.

Location, location
Pay careful attention to the placement of appliances. Your sink and dishwasher need to be close together for plumbing reasons, and if your rubbish bin is too far from the sink you'll end up with food scraps all over the floor. Also, the golden rule of kitchen design says your sink, oven and workbench should form a triangle. Confused? Try drawing it on paper, and ask your builder for advice.

Space invaders
Maximising space is key to good kitchen design. If you are using a breakfast bar to separate the kitchen and living areas, consider adding a bench overhang that will double as a dining area. Also think about the distance between your benchtops: ideally you need at least 1000mm to move about comfortably. Finally, think carefully about your storage requirements, as the right number of cupboards and drawers will keep your kitchen tidy.

Light touch
The right balance of practical and ambient lighting is essential for good kitchen design. A combination of downlights, pendant lights and LED under-cabinet strips will ensure you can always see the food you're preparing. If you like to entertain, add some dimmable lighting; and don't forget powerpoints for all your appliances.
