Rebecca Waugh, Turning Dream Homes Into Reality

For G.J. Gardner Coffs Coast new home sales consultant Rebecca Waugh, building is in her blood and has given her a passion for helping her clients bring their home design dreams to life. Focus sat down with Rebecca to find out the secret to her success and why she believes she has the dream job.

Why did you choose a career in the building industry?

My Dad runs a successful building company in Sydney, which was originally my grandfather’s business, so you could say I’m a third generation building industry fanatic! Our family is always talking building, which keeps my passion for the industry alive. I’ve been in the building industry for 10 years, since I was 19, in various roles including project coordination and administration and after moving to the Coffs Coast from Sydney, I took up the role of new home sales consultant at G.J. Gardner in June last year.

Why did you move to the Coffs Coast area?

My husband and I have a two-year-old daughter and we just wanted to get out of the rat race and have a better lifestyle. The Coffs Coast has a really strong economy and all the facilities a young family needs like good schools and great shopping and we get to live in one of the most beautiful places in the country.

What does the role of new home sales consultant involve?

I guide my clients through the initial stages of the building process, helping them create the home that they want within their budget. My role involves planning their new home so that it can include many of the new features new home builders want like butler’s pantries, outdoor kitchens, alfresco outdoor spaces and courtyards but within their budget. This requires careful management of the budget on inclusions and selections so that clients can achieve a home that includes all the features they want. Construction methods and materials have come such a long way that you can now achieve a beautiful finish even with standard design selections.

You’re having great success in your new role – what’s your secret?

I believe life is too short to work tirelessly in a job you don’t enjoy. When you enjoy your job and you’re passionate about the industry you work in, success will follow. I’ve already exceeded the sales goals I had for my first year in the role and a big part of that is because of the team I work with. The owners Rick and Susan Fischer are multi-award winning builders and that has given me a lot of pride and confidence in working for a great building company that has such a strong reputation.

What’s your tip for the next hot house design trend?

I’ve recently seen some interest from clients in the Hamptons style of house, which blends architectural elegance with a cosy feel and I think this is a style that is perfectly suited to our lifestyle here. We don’t see many Hamptons-style homes here at the moment but I’m predicting it’s a house design trend that will take off.
