What it’s like building with G.J. Gardner Homes

Michelle Nagle and her husband recently worked with G.J. Gardner Homes to build their “perfect” home at Mirador on the NSW Sapphire Coast. She gave the G.J. Gardner team a 5 out of 5 star score on ProductReview.com.au, so we thought we’d catch up with her to chat about her building experience and to find out why she gave G.J. Gardner Homes a top score.

1.    Help from the get-go

When Michelle first met with G.J. Gardner Homes, following a recommendation from a friend, she and her husband were still in the process of trying to find suitable land to build on. The G.J. Gardner Homes team went straight to work, finding her an ideal block that was available from a private seller. Michelle had visited the local G.J. Gardner Homes display home and decided on that particular house design for her block of land. However, following further research from the G.J. Gardner team, they recommended modifying the house design to take better advantage of the coastal views. “They went back to the drawing board and created a design that would better fit the block of land. At that stage we had not signed a contract with them, so the work they did was in good faith.” 

2.    Planning a beautiful house

The house was designed to include the special features that Michelle and her husband wanted, including an outdoor alfresco area accessible from two sides of the living area and an oversized master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and large en-suite. When choosing fixtures and fittings for the house, Michelle was able to draw inspiration from the display of products at the G.J. Gardner office. “One of the G.J. Gardner Homes team also took me around to the suppliers to give me an even better understanding of all the products available.”

3.    Professional management of the construction process

Michelle has had previous experience in the real estate industry and has worked with many builders. “The G.J. Gardner Homes construction foreman was among the best foremen on any building site in Australia.” She said the G.J. Gardner construction supervisors offered open communication and were available at any time to answer questions about the build. “My husband was still working in Canberra at the time and the construction supervisors had no trouble organising inspections for him when he was down, on top of the pre-scheduled inspection times throughout the build.” Having a thorough knowledge of local tradespeople and suppliers, Michelle said the G.J. Gardner site supervisors employed a “tight crew” and their team of tradespeople were professional and completed each aspect of the build to a very high standard and on time.

4.    Built on time and to a fixed price

The Nagle’s home was built within two days of the agreed timeframe and was only two days late due to a council recommendation that a back step be modified to meet regulations. “This was nothing to do with G.J. Gardner, however the G.J. Gardner site supervisor quickly managed the issue and had us in our new home within days.” Michelle said the only variations to the fixed price contract were variations made by the couple. “When we decided to make changes, the G.J. Gardner team quickly costed these up for us and at cost price – there was no attempt by them to make money through these variations.”

Michelle summed up her experience with G.J. Gardner Homes, saying: “Right from the initial phone calls and meetings, the G.J. Gardner team was so positive and we had absolutely the most seamless building experience. They are professional but low key and as local builders, they know that in a small town like ours, if they don’t do the right thing, word gets around quickly.”
